Apex Storage Powers Real-Time Network Traffic Capture and Analysis at Black Hat USA NOC
Las Vegas, NV — August 6, 2025 — Apex Storage is proud to announce its role in the Network Operations Center (NOC) at Black Hat USA, where its Apex Storage X16 Gen5 NVMe add-in card enabled unprecedented real-time packet capture and analysis at 100 gigabits per second using open source tools.
The project leveraged a compact Supermicro mini server equipped with 128 GB of RAM and running Debian Linux, demonstrating the power and versatility of Apex Storage in demanding, real-world environments. With support for up to 16 NVMe drives and speeds exceeding 54 GB/s for both read and write operations, the Apex X16 Gen5 provided up to 128 terabytes of ultrafast storage, making point-of-capture, real-time analysis possible.
A highlight of the demonstration was the debut of the newly open-sourced VIBES network visualizer, authored by Apex Storage cofounder Mike Spicer (@d4rkm4tter). VIBES offers real-time visualization of network traffic, empowering security teams to monitor and analyze data flows instantly. During peak conference hours, the system parsed and analyzed traffic that saturated the 20 gigabit per second conference uplink, showcasing the Apex X16 Gen5’s ability to handle extreme data rates with ease.
